Plywood Marine: what is it?

Plywood Marine is a type of plywood that is resistant to moisture and is therefore used for outdoor applications or in damp areas. Just like birch plywood, the board is glued with a waterproof adhesive. Okoumé is more resistant to moisture, making this variant suitable for outdoor applications. But you can also choose this board because of its beautiful pink-red colour with coarse flames and the fact that it is easy to work with. Plywood is made up of several layers of veneer. These layers are glued together crosswise, resulting in a stable board. The boards have an attractive edge that is suitable for visible work. Our plywood boards are suitable for horizontal applications, such as table tops and window sills. For vertical applications, take into account the possibility of warping.

Visual quality, structural B/BB

The visual quality of plywood is indicated by letter combinations that describe the quality of the top layers. The first letter stands for the visible side (top) and the second letter for the reverse side (bottom). This classification only refers to the face veneer; other properties, such as gluing or structural strength, are assessed separately. Read more about all visual qualities here.

A common combination is B/BB, which is regularly used in structural or less decorative applications. In this designation, “B” indicates the quality of the visible side, while “BB” describes the quality of the reverse side.

This sheet material has a B/BB quality. This means that the top side (B side) generally has a neat appearance, but may still contain natural irregularities, such as slight colour differences, small knots or subtle repairs. The underside (BB side) shows more visible imperfections, such as larger knots, repairs and variations in colour and structure.

Because the visual quality is slightly lower than higher classifications, B/BB plywood is often used in construction projects, interior finishes, furniture construction and situations where the surface may be visible, but aesthetics are not the most important requirement. The material offers a good balance between technical performance and an acceptable appearance for functional applications. This also keeps the board affordable.

In short: B/BB plywood offers a solid visual quality that is suitable for construction applications where a neat but not perfectly finished appearance is sufficient.

Available thicknesses of plywood Marine

Plywood is available in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This ensures that the sheet material meets your requirements in terms of both size and thickness. The following thicknesses are available: 4 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm, 18 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm and 40 mm.

Processing plywood Marine sheets

Plywood okoumé is a hard sheet material. It is easy to work with if you have sharp tools. For drilling holes, we recommend a wood drill bit with a centring point. Pre-drilling is also recommended for this sheet material. This sheet material can discolour over time, so finish it with a (clear) varnish, stain or paint. Use an edge sealer to finish the edges of plywood to prevent the varnish or stain from penetrating the sheet material, which can cause the veneer layers to peel off. Are you going to use okoumé outdoors? Then it is important to seal the edges with an edge sealer. In order to enjoy your project outdoors for a long time, this sheet material still needs protection against damp weather conditions.

Specific applications of plywood Marine

Plywood Marine is ideal for projects such as dormer windows, façade cladding, table tops and worktops.
